Immigrant entrepreneurs to be honored

Three Lowell entities are among 36 in the state nominated for The Immigrant Learning Center’s third annual Immigrant Entrepreneur Awards.

Nominees represent business leaders from throughout the state in four business categories: Neighborhood, Growth, Life Science and High-Tech.

Winners for each category will be announced at the Immigrant Entrepreneur Awards Dinner on Thursday, at the Royal Sonesta Hotel in Cambridge.

When Sichan Siv crossed Cambodia in the mid-1970s, he saw decomposing bodies all along his travels.

When he was placed into a Khmer Rouge labor camp, he worked for 18 hours a day and received one measly meal a day, not knowing if he would wake up the next morning.

When he finally escaped, he avoided mines in the jungle and went without food and drink for three days.

Press Club at Tepthida

Roger and Soben Pin formerly published the Khmer Post newspaper in Philadelphia before moving to Lowell more than a year ago. In Philadelphia, they routinely held gatherings where members of the city’s Cambodian community and public officials could come together and discuss the issues of concern to the community. Roger and Soben have now brought that practice to Lowell, hosting the first Khmer Post USA Press Club yesterday (January 31, 2014) at the Tepthida Khmer Restaurant on Chelmsford Street. A buffet lunch was served and then members of the local Cambodian community and city officials spoke.

Two weeks before Pol Pot, under whose Khmer Rouge regime more than two million Cambodians perished, died in April 1998, Roger Samkhon Pin became the only Cambodian journalist to interview him.

Pin made the feared dictator cry.
