One hundred years ago this month, Dudley Page opened his candy store at 16 Merrimack Street in Lowell. Dudley had been operating the D. L. Page Company since 1866 which had several different locations in downtown Lowell through the years. This new store was his biggest yet and, at 68 years of age, he did not plan to move again. He celebrated his new location by installing a large, fancy clock on the sidewalk outside his store. Forever after, the clock was known as Page’s Clock. It still stands today.
Dudley Page was born in New London, New Hampshire on October 20, 1845. When he was six years old, his family moved to Billerica, Massachusetts. Shortly after the outbreak of the American Civil War, Dudley enlisted in the Union Army at age 17. He served in the 33rd Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment from 1862 until the end of the war in 1865. As a member of the 33rd Regiment, he fought in many famous battles including Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Chattanooga, Atlanta, and Sherman’s March to the Sea.
After the war, Dudley opened his store, first selling candy but then adding ice cream, baked goods and other things. His Merrimack Street store filled five floors of the building. According to an advertisement in the 1932 Lowell City Directory, the D. L. Page Co. offered ice cream, candy, a bakery, a restaurant, a tea room, a soda fountain, catering and a delicatessen. The ad featured a drawing of the clock with the saying “At the Clock in the Sq.” This refers Kearney Square, which is the intersection of Merrimack, Bridge and Prescott Streets in downtown Lowell.
According to the 1940 census, Dudley Page was 96 years old that year and lived at 429 Andover Street with his 70 year old wife, Ella, and his 39 year old chauffer (driver) whose name was Clarence Kochersperger. For “occupation”, the census listed Dudley as “president of food company.” Dudley continued working at his candy business until his death on November 20, 1942 at age 98. The D. L. Page Company continued in operation until 1947 when it closed.
Dudley Page may be gone, but his memory remains with us because of the beautiful clock he placed on the sidewalk of Merrimack Street. The clock, made by the Seth Thomas Company of Thomaston, Connecticut (which also manufactured the clock atop Lowell City Hall) was refurbished in the 1990s but had again stopped working. Efforts are now underway to repair the clock so that it will always show the correct time while standing as a landmark for Lowell residents and as a memorial to Dudley Page.

រូបកាយលោកដឹដលី ផេជ បានឃ្លាតឆ្ងាយពីយើង ប៉ុន្តែអនុស្សាវរីយ៍ និងការចងចាំតាមរយៈនាឡិកដែលមានរូបរាងប្រណិតមួយនេះតាំងនៅក្នុងជំហរមិនសាបសូន្យនៅឡើយ។ នាឡិកាគឺសាងសង់ក្នុងជំនាន់តែមួយនឹងនាឡិកានៅកំពូលសាលាក្រុង។ នាឡិការផេជ បានកសាងឡើងនៅខែមករាឆ្នាំ ១៩១៤ ដោយក្រុមហ៊ុនសេត ថូម៉ាស នៅខូនិកធិកខិត ហើយស្ថាបនាឡើងវិញនៅឆ្នាំ១៩៩០។
