5,000 US Soldiers to Rest and Recuperate in Pattaya
PHNOM PENH, August 27, 2026 – Approximately 5,000 US Navy sailors and Marines will arrive in Pattaya next week for rest and recuperation, as the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group docks at Laem Chabang port from September 2 to 6 following an extended deployment in the Middle East.
The three-ship group’s visit is intended solely for crew rest and logistical support, not a joint military exercise, according to Thai authorities.
Pattaya Mayor Poramet Ngampichet said the city is ready to welcome the personnel, with local tourism operators prepared to receive visitors. The city will coordinate with police and other agencies to ensure safety for both tourists and visiting military personnel.
The mayor expects the visit to provide a significant boost to local businesses, estimating that 5,000 personnel spending between 1,000 and 3,000 baht each could generate 5 to 15 million baht in local revenue—depending on how many are permitted to go ashore.
The USS Abraham Lincoln has been deployed for more than 200 days with limited port visits. The stop in Thailand is expected to give personnel a much-needed opportunity to rest and replenish supplies before continuing their deployment.
