Cambodia Records Sixth Bird Flu Case in Oddar Meanchey

PHNOM PENH — A 49-year-old man in Oddar Meanchey province has tested positive for H5N1 bird flu, becoming the sixth human case reported in Cambodia in 2026.

The Health Ministry on Sept. 28 reported that the patient was tested on Sept. 27 at the National Institute of Public Health and is receiving intensive care at a hospital.

The patient had also tested positive for H5N1 on Sept. 23 at the National Animal Health and Production Research Institute, the ministry said.

The man, from Tuol Kruos village in Ou Svay commune, Trapeang Prasat district, is a poultry farmer. He reportedly had contact with sick and dead chickens on his farm several days before developing symptoms.

The ministry is taking immediate measures to prevent further infections while working with national and subnational officials, as well as a working group from the provincial agriculture department and local authorities, to investigate the spread of the virus among animals and people.

The working group is also seeking people who may have had contact with the chickens to prevent further infections. Tamiflu (oseltamivir) is being administered to people considered at risk.

The ministry called on the public to remain vigilant for H5N1 infection if they develop symptoms within 14 days of having contact with sick or dead poultry.
