The Cambodian Mutual Assistance Association of Greater Lowell (CMAA) will hold its 32nd annual celebration on Saturday December 3rd at Sompao Meas Hall in Lowell. The fundraising event will feature community recognitions, a five course meal, live entertainment by members of the youth programs and Angkor Dance Troupe.
Three award recipients will be honored by the CMAA during the event and they are the following: Kowith Kret for the Community Hero Award, Jim Wilde of the Merrimack Valley Housing Partnership for Community Partner Award, and the Sompao Meas Hall for Local Business Award.
CMAA, the oldest Cambodian non-profit organization in Lowell since 1984, has served the Cambodian immigrants and refugees whoneeded assistance and resources to resettle their new lives in Lowell. Last year alone, over 2,400 walk-in visits by over 800 distinct individuals have received assistance from CMAA.
Sovanna Pouv, CMAA Executive Director noted the importance of community support, “Over the past 31 years, CMAA has helped thousands of families and individuals right up until this very day. Without the support of our friends, family and community partners, we wouldn’t be able to assist individuals to become citizens, vote, learn English and buy homes for the first time.”
One of the successful partnerships is the collaboration with the Merrimack Valley Housing Part-nership, together they have educated and prepared nearly 700 Khmer speaking families about becoming the home owner.
“This year CMAA celebrates 32 years of service to the Lowell community”, said newly appointed Board President Virak Uy. “As we move forward, we will continue to honor our heritage and those who have sacrificed for us in the past, heal those who are still struggling every day to survive so that they can hope for a better future.”
The event is on Saturday December 3rdat Sompao Meas Hall, 450 Chelmsford Street in Lowell at 6:00 p.m. Tickets are $50 and may be purchased by calling 978-454-6200 at the door.
