The Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts has issued a statement on the “Protection of Khmer Cultural Heritage,” noting that Cambodia’s rich tangible and intangible heritage — including traditional clothing and cultural arts — is supported by historical and archaeological evidence.
It specifically explained that the “Sbai”, a traditional shawl worn around the chest and shoulders, is deeply rooted in Khmer civilisation dating back to the Funan period.
The statement was issued in response to comments circulating on Thai social media and remarks by some Thai politicians regarding traditional attire and objections to the promotion of Khmer culture.
Recently, several prominent Thai individuals, including politicians, with a misunderstanding of history have claimed that the “Sbai costume” belongs to Thai culture, without any factual basis.
“The Sbai is an essential part of Khmer women’s attire, used in traditional dress and wedding ceremonies — especially in the ritual Preah Thong Taong Sbai. It has been closely tied to Khmer civilisation since the Funan era and has been preserved and practiced by Khmer people across generations up to the present day. It remains a vital and enduring element of Khmer traditions, from the past to the present and into the future,” explained the ministry.
The statement called on the Cambodian public to remain calm, uphold national dignity and act responsibly in any responses, maintaining high cultural ethics.
“As a people with a long-standing civilisation that values cultural dignity, we must stand on historical truth, grounded in the strength of our rich cultural heritage passed down over thousands of years, and maintain confidence in international law,” it said.
“Cultural heritage should not be used as a political tool to incite society or fuel racial discrimination. On the contrary, culture should serve as a bridge for mutual understanding and shared progress,” it added.
In this spirit, the ministry called on cultural institutions, educational bodies and public authorities across ASEAN member states to work together to promote accurate historical understanding and mutual respect for cultural identities — one of the core values of the ASEAN community.
“The Kingdom of Cambodia remains committed to safeguarding its cultural heritage while strengthening international cultural cooperation, respecting other nations and honouring the shared cultural diversity of Southeast Asia and the world,” it concluded.
