On February 22nd, crowds of spectators descended upon a single spot to watch the elite competition taking place on snow and ice. No, it was not Sochi, Russia—but Lowell, Massachusetts, home of the 14th Annual Winterfest and the always engaging National Human Dogsled Competition.
Eighteen teams competed in the double-elimination tournament which due to poor weather Friday was held during a single Saturday afternoon instead of the usual two-day format. After several rounds of spirited racing down the Arcand Drive Track, it was the team of “Still Hungry” that emerged victorious knocking off the defending champion Upper Cut Landscaping.
Other teams participating included Sage Bank, Enterprise Bank, CTI Team, Chariots of Pawtucketville, The Boozehounds, Greater Lowell , United Green Dragons, Sean Shanley and the Project Specialists, The Pride of Lowell, Middlesex Rugby, Madd Love, MJR Mad Dogs, Boys and Girls Club Teen Team, All You Need’s a Shove, Shane’s Antibullying, and Team TRC.
The often-creative dogsled teams also were judged on their costuming efforts. In that competition, All You Need is a Shove was awarded the gold, while two entrants from across the river, the Chariots of Pawtucketville and Pawtucketville News Team took home the silver and bronze respectively. The Banker’s Cup, a special contest between the various local banks participating, went to Enterprise Bank.
Until we hear that the Human Dogsled Competition is accepted into the Winter Games of Pyeongchang 2018, we can more than settle by looking forward to the 15th Annual Winterfest next year right in the heart of Downtown Lowell.
