Jumpstart Summer with MCC’s College for Kids

With Middlesex Community College’s summer programming, parents can keep their kids learning, having fun, and following a routine. Starting Monday, July 7, MCC’s College for Kids classes provide unique opportunities for students 8 to 17 to explore interests, learn new skills, meet new friends, and boost self-confidence.

“Our goal is to ensure young students and their families find the balance between staying engaged and having fun through creative expression,” said Ellen Wright, MCC’s Assistant Director of Lifelong Learning and Workforce Development. “We work with students of all ages and can help them gain new skills and get early exposure to fields they would not get otherwise. There’s still time to register for sessions starting on July 7.”

Throughout the summer, kids can choose from a variety of subjects. Topics include STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics), cookie decorating, fitness, and arts and crafts.

Running July 28 to July 31, Science Discovery Lab will guide students through scientific experiments to make concepts clearer and more logical. Cookie Decorating will run August 4 to August 7, teaching students different techniques and frostings. Students can also take Fit Kids from August 4 to 7 to go through yoga and body weight exercises, as well as a variety of playground games and activities.
In Exploration Art Studio, students use a variety of art materials through hands-on learning and creative play. Taught by instructor Bethany Kalabokis, the class will run from 9 a.m. to noon from July 7 to July 10.

“Throughout the class, children will be introduced to a variety of materials, including clay, watercolor, mixed media with recycled materials, monotype printmaking, and more,” Kalabokis said. “I’ll demonstrate techniques and provide inspiring sample projects as starting points, encouraging each child to explore their own ideas and express their imagination. Students will also have plenty of time to dive into personal projects and follow their unique creative paths.”

Programs are offered in Bedford and Lowell, featuring five weeks of full- and half-day programs from July 7 to August 7, Monday through Thursday. Full-day programs run 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and half-day programs run 9 a.m. to noon or 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Students who take two half-day programs to make a full day can stay on campus for lunch in between the two sessions.

Taught by public school teachers and professionals, College for Kids topics include STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), arts and crafts, baking, aviation, photography, fashion design, online gaming and game design, filmmaking, and fitness.
