Mr. Um Sam An calls for the release of Mr. Kem Sokha and prisoners of conscience if the Cambodian government wants to gratitude tto US.

Senior opposition officials are calling for the release of CNRP leader Kem Sokha and all prisoners of conscience if the Cambodian government truly wants to gratitude to US President Donald Trump for helping Cambodia end its war with Thailand.
CNRP Member of P arliament Um Sam An wrote on his Facebook page on August 8 that Hun Manet’s letter to the Nobel Peace Prize Committee in support of Donald Trump’s candidacy, the Nobel Peace Prize is a good thing because Donald Trump sought peace for the Cambodian people from Thai aggression.
Um Sam An claims that what Donald Trump and the United States want most is the release of Kem Sokha, who the court has charged with conspiring with the United States to overthrow the Cambodian government, including the release of prisoners of conscience, restore democracy, respect for human rights, and the organization of free and fair elections.
The opposition official stated that if the Cambodian government truly wants to gratitute Donald Trump and the United States, then the government should comply with America’s wishes.

On August 7, 2025, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet sent a letter to the Nobel Peace Prize Committee in support of US President Donald Trump’s nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Hun Manet stated that the request for this award is in line with the requests of Cambodian citizens both at home and abroad and as a way of thanking Donald Trump for his direct attention to the initiative and urge a ceasefire between the Cambodian and Thai armies, as well as continue to monitor the implementation of the ceasefire until there is complete peace between the two countries.
Regarding this issue, former Chief of Staff of the CNRP President, Mr. Muth Chantha, stated on August 7 that he supports the Royal Government of Cambodia in restoring good relations with the United States, but Cambodia should first clear up the US accusations of treason against Kem Sokha to show its good will and gratitude to America from a pure heart.
Kem Sokha has been charged by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court with treason, with the US being behind the overthrow of the Cambodian government, and decided to sentence him to 27 years in prison, including the deprivation of the right to hold political office for life, on March 3, 2023.
