New Lowell City Council, Mayor Sworn In

On a cold and foggy Monday morning in January, the 2014-2015 Lowell City Council was sworn into office, ushering a new era in the Mill City.  As is tradition, the first order of business was to elect a new mayor for the term.  Long-time city councilor Rodney Elliott was given the gavel after 16 years and long desiring the position.

The council consisted of 5 returning councilors, Rita Mercier who topped the ticket in the November election, Elliott, Edward Kennedy, Bill Martin, and John Leahy who was elected as the vice chairman of the council.  First time councilors included Danny Rourke, former Lowell High School Headmaster William “Bill” Samaras, and former Zoning Board member Corey Belanger.  Former mayor and councilor Jim Millinazzo also returns to the council after having lost his seat in the 2011 election.

In his inaugural address, Elliott stressed public safety and economic development as two of his primary issues.  Elliott identified a recent spike in gun violence as the top public safety concern of his tenure.   Elliott also would like to see the city focus on attracting and retaining new businesses to the city.  As mayor, he will also serve as chair of the school committee, which was also sworn in later that day.   Education priorities include striving to improve facilities and student performance.
